Pine Trees Reaching for the Sky

This shot of pine trees reaching towards the sky was taken with a Canon 17-35mm wide angle lens at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park near Grand Haven, Michigan.

Steelbridge at Sunset

This shot of the steel bridge was taken at sunset from the Burnside bridge in Portland, Oregon.  It was that perfect time when the lights from the city were just coming on, and the sun was just heading out.

Cold Footprints, Lake Michigan Beach

This photo was taken in Early December on the shores of Lake Michigan.  It was very late in Autumn on the edge of winter, and and the colors were particularly washed out.  Everything was varying hues of grays, blues, and pale yellows.

Sunflower

Happy SUN-day everyone!  While exploring the neighborhood near my house in south-east Portland one afternoon I found this sunflower perfectly positioned with the sun shinning directly behind it.  I didn't even notice the silhouette of the fly on the bottom right leaf until I reviewed my photos later.

Old Man Thinking on Train

This photo was taken from aboard the Blue Line train near Wicker Park in Chicago IL.  It was a grey spring day and the washed out colors emphasized the grittiness of the city.  The old man in front of me was deep in thought staring out the window.

Bald Eagle of the Gods

This photo of the underside of the Bridge of the Gods was taken on a trip out to the Columbia River Gorge one misty afternoon.  Looking up the graffiti eagle caught my eye and I  immediately thought "How did someone get up there to paint that?".  The massiveness of the structure along with the bald eagle juxtaposed against the hazy blue skies gave me a sense of freedom.

Yellow in Green

This shot of Morrison Park was taken from atop the Morrison Bridge in Portland, OR.  The man in the yellow sweatshirt was the only object in a vast field of grass.

Bridge of the Gods

View from the underside of the Bridge of the Gods, Cascade Locks, Oregon.  The modern structure is named after a land bridge(Which has since been eroded) caused by the Bonneville Land Slide sometime around 1450.  The name originated from Native American legend.

Rusty Wire #2

Part two of the Rusty Wire composition.

Rusty Wire #1

Growing up in the rust belt of the Midwest I have always had a fascination with, well, rust.  The patterns and colors it creates are absolutely amazing.  While riding my bike through the industrial district of Portland, OR on one of the first sunny days of the year I came across this rusted barbed wire. The deep orange against the azure blue skies struck a chord with me.

Fireworks from Morrison St.

The viewpoint of the 4th July fireworks in Portland,  Oregon from the Morrison St. I-5 overpass.  Cars along the expressway halted to a near stop to see the display.

Half Moon Detail

The cosmos has always been of particular intrest to me.  It's so easy to forget that the glowing orb we see in the sky every month is really a giant, crater ridden rock flying through the infinite at thousands of miles an hour.

Cold Shores of Lake Michigan

This photo was taken on an early December hike at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon, Michigan.  It was a very ominous and grey day, with all the colors faded and washed out.

Rose Test Garden, Portland OR

Taken at the Rose Test Garden in Portland, OR.

Pine Grove, P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, Michigan

This picture was during an overcast hike through P.J. Hoffmaster State Park near Muskegon, MI.  The tall, branchless trunks in the pine grove combined with a wide angle lens created a surreal effect.

Wild Abandon, Portland Oregon

A pair of beautiful lights outside of Wild Abandon, a restaurant in Portland, OR.  This picture was taken one night while walking around my old neighborhood, Sunnyside.  The glow of the green and gold against the fading twilight, as well as the reflection off the corrugated steel, struck me as interesting.

Gold Bluff Beach, Birds at Sunset

This picture was taken during a retreat to Gold Bluff Beach State Park in Humboldt County, California.  It was late on a warm July afternoon and the all the seagulls were feeding in the evening surf.  This is by far one of the coolest campgrounds I've ever stayed at.  The sites are right on the beach with a giant, redwood lined, bluff inland.
